When I made my short film Roberta’s Living Room, I always envisioned there could be an incredible screening experience that reflect the setting within the film: bringing the garden into the living room. So when Lululemon’s Chicago team reached out to me to screen my short film AND to art direct the space for an immersive experience, I didn’t hesitate.

Art directing the space involved three main elements: the plants, furniture and artworks. I partnered with Zac Hall, who was the original garden designer in the short film to bring the flora aspect back to life. I didn’t want to recreate the film’s set look exactly. It was more about evoking that look and making it feel magical and transformative, while still making it a screening and gathering space. The furniture in this setting served not only as practical seating, but also brought back the look of the thrown out furniture in Roberta’s Living Room. Finally, I curated artworks by a handful of local artists that connected thematically with this space. Those works included AR floral posters, a sculpture and video installations.

The turnout was amazing, a sold-out night.
